I should add "The Pentagon Papers" by Sheean does cover some of the main events in the war (I think it ends at the Tet Offensive) but is mostly concerned with comparing the reality as described by the leaks with the perception manufacture at home. It's an excellent book but not a history of the war as such. "A Bright Shining Lie" by the same author is also good. He did two tours in Vietnam; the first as a true believer and the second as a more disillusioned realist. Again, this isn't a history as such although it does cover more than his two tours. A recent novel, ‘The Sympathizer,’ by Viet Thanh Nguyen is also excellent but takes the end of the war as its starting point.
