"Remember how the Tory gutter press attacked Michael Foot for the coat he wore to the Cenotaph?"
Oh yes: the so-called "Donkey Jacket"
“'An old man with a green donkey-jacket, flapping trousers and casual shoes stood looking vaguely about him, like a bored tourist at bus-stop…and when his turn came, he laid his wreath of poppies with all the reverent dignity of a tramp bending down to inspect a cigarette end. This was the Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition paying his party’s tribute to the nation’s dead.”
- went Charles Moore's assassination in the Torygraph.
Educated me on a few points:
1. The clothes of Working class people are an insult to working class dead: they apparently demand sartorial elegance.
2. The Telegraph is the official spokesman for the working class Dead.
Actually what I really learned was this:
There are no depths the shameless media will not stoop to for political gain and the British public are suckers for pseudo atavistic sentiment.
