Fine, as long as when this is all over, Johnson takes responsibility for the outcome in all its ramifications. The likelihood is, though, that he will seek to blame the 'scientists' for bad advice and the public for not following the - ambiguous - advice. Being PM, despite what he would have liked, is not some kind of vanity gig. It's about taking responsibility. Johnson has signally failed. And deserves to be hung out to dry.
