    Yes, the over-worked, chronically stressed person / body inhibits all kinds of symptoms. This is stress hormones at work, specifically, cortisol, from the adrenals. It's the fight or flight response constantly firing: physiological short-termism: put metabolism on the back-burner. What happens biochemically is that metabolites are not excreted into the system for disposal, but stored up within the cell for later. It's the body kicking the can down the road but feels good. It has a function and can be a life-saver including when mimiced by drugs - e.g. (esp.) anabolic steroids for extreme inflammatory reactions - atopic and allergic reactions

    So, what happens when you finally rest is you get ill (through the mediation of catalytic viri and bacteria), feel shit and bemoan your lot... as your body fixes itself. It's known to some as the cleansing crisis or healing crisis.
