Like I said, it's overall deaths and as it happens in March it shoots up like there is no tomorrow. It's obviously the virus, never mind the underlying causes. In other words it wouldn't have happened if the virus wasn't around. I've never said the virus caused no deaths. About 40000. As for "shooting up like there's no tomorrow", do not forget that a large fraction of these deaths occurred in care homes thanks to stupidly inept policies based on a hyped up fear. As to "what would I do about it", usual practice is to isolate and care for the sick, while giving extra protection to the most vulnerable (especially those in care homes). The state could also provide extra deliveries to such people. But no lockdown. .. all I can assume is that you are touting the example of Sweden and Byelarus, so I have to assume these would be your ideal scenarios. "Touting"? I gave these examples because you were wondering what would happen if there was no lockdown. You don't have to assume anything. Byelarus is probably a bad example since we are unlikely to get any meaningful statistics from them. Perhaps the data may not be very accurate from there. But we've seen enough coverage of protests in Minsk to indicate no horrifying epidemic. Note that people were not protesting to have lockdowns etc. They protested against the election outcome and what they perceive as corrupt government. You don't have time for such things if people are dying all over. [The same can be said for US cities -- those protesters were not in the least concerned about infections.] As for Sweden, it may be less populated than the UK, but it does have cities (far bigger than eg Leicester) where the infection should (according to you) shoot up like there's no tomorrow. Except it didn't.
