"Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees.

We provide immediate medical aid to those in great need, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system."

As I stated before when I first reported the death of my long-term friend Declan Murray "Medical Aid for Palestinians" was probably the charity closest to his heart (certainly he had supported them -and refugees from many lands when he taught English to them here in Southampton-), and it will be "MAP" we will be raising money for on Saturday outside the "Victory Centre" in the middle of Portswood High St. in Southampton (opposite October books), when we offer his considerable book collection for sale (by donation).
Declan did not (as I reported before), die of heatstroke on that August night in Droxford in-fact he died (very swiftly -thankfully-), of a fractured skull, he hit the corner of a bridge on a turn at the foot of a hill with his chest and came off the bike backwards, he was not wearing a cycling helmet (now all his friends are contemplating purchasing same!), he was dead within about half an hour despite the very swift attendance and efforts of the first responders.

"Declan was a prolific reader (oft patron of October Books the co-operatively run book-store in Portswood High St), and very active campaigner/with an extensive book collection that we (and his family), would like to make available to scholars and academics who would make best use of the works. Topics are mostly in the arts, humanities and social sciences (although not exclusively so as Declan had studied bio-chemistry at degree level); we have listed the authors of which Declan had more than a single work, these are; Norman Mailer, Eduardo Ebney (SU alumni and celebrated Chilean dissident -poet-, these three works are all signed), Dostoyevsky, Marcuse, Koestler, Huxley, Eliot, J.B.Priestly, Orwell, Herman Hess, Jorge Luis Borges, William Burroughs, Chomsky, Marx, Lenin, E.P Thomson, Hannah Arendt, Kafka, D.H.Lawrence, Gramsci, Lao Tzu, Brecht and John Pilger, the collection also includes work by David Cromwell (friend of Tony's and co-creator of the Media Lens), and anthologies/collections and single works by many other authors, we estimate that there are around 300 books in total (the bias is certainly towards politics/philosophy with an emphasis on human/worker's rights -and a decent amount of psychology thrown in-)." From email shot to SUSU and others.

We intend to advertise this to the Southampton and Solent University "Freshers"..our thinking was this; Declan's excellent collection of books could have sat on mine and Tony's shelves being (maybe), occasionally "dipped-into" or the books could go to students, politicos and academics who would readily use and appreciate them.

If you're in Southampton on Saturday and at a loose end stop buy for a chat!
