It's not the big smear and bias campaigns the BBC wages, it's the small daily incremental hints and nudges that really do the damage. Take today's Emma Barnett show on Radio 5 Live. She was interviewing a scientist about how we should tackle this latest upsurge in cases and he gave a long and detailed and considered answer in which he said it was the failure of the test and trace system to blame (which many other countries -- and he named them -- had effectively put in place) and that this was down to the government in not organising and funding it properly. Emma then said, "You're a Labour supporter aren't you? And you donate to the Labour party." The inference being of course that his professional judgement was affected and influenced by being a Labour supporter. He said no, he hadn't donated to the Labour party. This was the wrong answer. He should have said, Are you impugning my professional conduct? Are you suggesting my personal political views are leading me to give biased answers? What evidence and by what right do you have to make this assertion? And have you ever put to a scientist who supports the government's position the same question, asking if they support and donate to the tory party? And if not, why put that question to me? It was a minor note in an otherwise long interview, lasting only seconds, yet it shows as plainly as you could ever hope to see the daily subtle propaganda being waged (possibly unknowably by the likes of Barnett because it's inbred in her mindset). Indeed, I suspect that if she were challenged about it, Barnett would be genuinely affronted that she wasn't behaving impartially. She loves reading out comments that people accuse her of "being a Leftie" or speaking for authority because in her eyes it proves she has the balance just about right. Which of course is prime bollox. |
