No probs John, yes it's all well hidden from the consumer, as with the effects of modern farming on nonhuman plants, animals and ecosystems. Haven't heard much about the situation for migrant workers in the UK since covid. I put up the job description for one of the fruit farms I applied to back in March over here, which gives some indication of what it's like for them FYI:
(That's what they say up front, of course the reality could be a lot different - I've heard for example that those failing to keep up with quotas simply have their working hours cut on their payslip, and there's no telling what happens to undocumented migrant workers...)
Not a bad idea - the farm actually was profitable this year, though much of the infrastructure is subsidised by an attached commercial-scale operation and sometimes directly by the landowner. I wouldn't mind so much if they were at least honest about it, and didn't keep on pretending that there was some kind of democratic say in the decision-making. It would stink, but at least you wouldn't feel obliged to go along with the pretense just to keep the Lord & Lady of the Manor happy. Very weird place, no doubt not the only one...
