Ha, yes. It does to me. And they're very good at the advertising angle to sell to other middle class people too, despite the disconnect between the language and the reality. Spot on...the middle classes around here drive for miles in their big 4x4s to source all that organic goodness and spend a fortune getting "back to nature" in the "woodland" rustic shop/cafe drinking caffeine free organic coffee... surrounded by posters proposing they rediscover their spiritual mojo in some "retreat" or other or get their "chakras" serviced by various "Masters" of the arcane arts. If all else fails then there's always apparently the practitioner of "Pictish Reiki Shamanism" (I kid you not.) who will doubtless put you right with the world for a reasonable fee. I know, its easy to sneer and I'm very good at it but a nag in my mind tells me that there's something terribly wrong: something hangs about the whole set up from their feudal ownership to the implicit acceptance of the customer base that collective action over anything is futile and that its all about your own personal morality and salvation: an air of impotence disguised as virtuous "quietism". I suppose that we reached this point through Thatcher crushing the "vulgarity" of collective action in the form of the unions...because "there is no society" in her words that was greater than the individual... or at most the family. One of the things that has always bugged me about "Lord of the Rings" was the notion that the sensible staid and sturdy middle classes in the form of the Hobbits would save the day for humanity. In truth all Sauron needed to to was to set up a one week distraction or "retreat" on crystal chakra manipulation with organic vegan meals provided and whist they were all off in gaga land, the orcs would just march in and take over the show. ...In the real world maybe that's what's actually happened?
