"There is no question of secrecy being used to conceal failure", Archived Message

As could be predicted, the Manchester Arena inquiry won't provide any real answers as to why Abedi (the bomber) was not apprehended earlier because of "security reasons". In fact we know he and his brother were actively supported and funded by MI5 and allowed to travel between the UK and Libya in 2011 when Cameron was prime minister and Theresa May was Home Secretary in charge of the intelligence services. None of this will come out of course.

Equally disturbing is why the fire and rescue services took 2 hours to get to the scene, despite a call having been logged 3 minutes after the explosion. Police in the arena were desperate for stretchers and had to use a plastic advertising hoarding as a stretcher, which broke in two and the injured man fell onto a metal barrier. He died later in hospital.

The QC for the rescue services apologised to the families but offered no explanation for the two-hour delay. Quite incredible.

This is from the BBC website:

Ms McGahey QC (for MI5) told the inquiry at Manchester Magistrates' Court that MI5 cannot provide more details about this in an open hearing.

"There is no question of secrecy being used to conceal failure", she said. "MI5 has nothing to hide from this inquiry."

Ms McGahey said MI5 had provided unfettered access to the inquiry and information has been withheld from core participants only when necessary to protect national security.
