-I've been there. Its about 18 miles from where I was brought up and one of my best friends lived there. Not a hundred tears ago but going back forty or fifty, it was a shithole then and alas its still a shithole now. On the western side of the central belt moor (-there really is a big semi arid wasteland rough enough to be called a moor between Edinburgh and Glasgow.) scoured constantly by wind and rain. When I was young mining covered much of that whole area: Coal to the west, more shale oil to the east but it was on its way out. Ravenscraig steel works in the west then provided further employment until closed down by the Tories. Then they built an industrial park there to mop up the unemployment but its not been particularly successful.
Socially it was poverty stricken, deprived, hard drinking (dusty lungs then heat from the steelmills) and indeed often brutal environment. Posh sir Kier would have lasted about two minutes down the local and come out with a broken face. Now the only difference is that most of the jobs and thus the pubs and near everything else is closed down, so the alcoholics drink themselves to death cheaply at home. Its still a cesspit and the poverty is real.
