Early on, South Africa had a shortage of ventilators, and also high mortality rate on ventilators. Six out of the seven recovered. That was a huge turnaround for the team at Tygerberg,” said head of provincial department of health, Dr Keith Cloete. He said the high-flow nasal oxygen treatment was so successful that they were moving patients from critical care and ICU to normal wards.
