If we look at what we've had here over the year in terms of lockdowns and what we have not we can see it as a farce. Plane and tube and public transport travel, working and holidaying in other towns cities etc in different parts of the country. Business as usual for big business, school and college during lockdown. But for those between the cracks, no or reduced furlough pay (like this latest, taken from first quarter for zero hour contracts dropping take home pay for some from £1500 to under a thousand). Many more totally stranded. No money at all. No support, no contact with others. Those with pre existing physical and mental health issues facing extreme adversity in the face of national lockdowns and restrictions. Pubs, musicians and entertainers all swept under the carpet. Uncertainty meaning that even if they want to open when allowed the expenditure for perishables makes it impossible to consider. People are hurting. It seems only examined briefly as an aside. The wellbeing of the general populace and beyond these shores this time last year was all encompassing on sites like this, now it seems not so much. I guess it speaks in part to the general age of folk here and perhaps also to the general comfort many must also live in(personal concerns). With no rent relief from landlords or council tax except if I choose to go to benefits (still hoping work will pick up) I've moved to a cheaper flat. No ch, couldn't afford it anyway at the moment. I'm young enough to deal with it, many are not. How these obvious hardships as a result of nation wide lockdowns can be only a distant second to covid in our concerns I can't understand. It does seem though that if you bring it up (in whatever company) you get shot down fast as though it means you don't care or don't believe the story. Makes it tough. How the hell can we change anything to help all those seriously disadvantaged by this if we won't take account of the arguments against (this form of) lockdown? I get dans argument (because I personally wouldn't want to be dealing with so many really ill people dying and not being able to help. ) but I don't understand why other suffering takes a backseat. It isn't like we have a solution and if only we keep pushing forward with these half arsed lockdowns we will come out of the tunnel soon. Which means we're going to be here for a long time, or it will simply be abandoned. Which means the next step is to stop going on about covid itself and start talking and acting on solutions for all those swept away by it. I know this is a little group of individuals here and quite powerless in the grand scheme of things. But the only ones presently being noisy are those dismissing all facets of covid as a lie. It's a perfect scenario for govt. no real voices of reason to counter the bullshit. Some concessions and nuance to the argument (it's a bit you're with us or against us ATM) would be a good starting point imo. Another 6 months to a year of this and most smaller towns will be done. Seems a good excuse to engineer an apocalypse.. If towns go bankrupt does the govt have to give them any money? No idea.. I can see serious poverty in our futures ATM. Can anyone tell me what the likelihood of us being out of this is any time soon? I can't see it except by bravado with a miracle vaccine that better minds than mine seem to pin no hopes on. |
