I don't think i was dissembling (though i probably mangled the formulation), just passing on my lay understanding of the current opinion of science and social science on the topic (could have found a better link though). Saying race is a social construct isn't to say it doesn't have dramatic real life implications (like eg money). And it's not to deny there are genetic differences related to ancestry (like the obvious skin colour) just that they're much less of an impact on the overall possible variation of our genome than the allelles common to all groups - which makes race be considered not a useful category when talking about genetics. For example, there are larger genetic variations between different groups of black south african people than there are between south africans and all other 'racial' groups.
