I've been following the run up to the execution of Brandon Bernard with the usual horror but any posts on this subject usually attract zero comment so didn't post on it:

The Bernard case is pretty horrific but here's someone who really has been reformed in the nightmare sociopath factory of the US prison system....so best to kill him just in case.

The unseemly rush to kill five people in the transition period really takes the inhumanity of the death penalty to new depths. I think a major part of it is to bolster the Republican's/Trump's law and order credentials for the midterms and then 2024, especially as Biden is pretending he's going to try to abolish the death penalty.

A lot of research lately is showing that families of the victims don't actually find "closure" through the execution of the (supposed) murderer. At first they think everything will be better but as time goes on beyond execution day they realise nothing has changed and their loved one is still gone and killing someone else over it has done nothing to help that. It's one of the last rationales for keeping the death penalty but of course the real reason is the only one they don't say out loud.
