    Good stuff, particularly this bit -

And the only reason that the non-reply you will eventually receive doesn’t open with the salutation ‘Dear dirt‘ is that the remainder of its contents make such arresting frankness quite unnecessary.'

    I remember when I used to listen to Radio 4 they had a programme on a Friday afternoon that was a kind of 'Points of View' where people could send in their various (usually pretty trivial) complaints about Radio 4's output. The presenter was a jocular fellow and the whole exercise was conducted with an elbow in the ribs, roll of the eyes, raised eyebrow sort of tone. Despite the complaints being of the rather pedantic kind that you might expect from the sort of person who would write into such a programme, they never gave an inch, not even to Gladdis from Swanage or whoever when they maybe disagreed with the tone of an Archers episode. Not. One. Inch.
