I'd long suspected that blaming the disease was a useful way for colonialists to deny their crimes and/or those of their ancestors but wasn't aware of the theory that it only ravaged populations whose health had already been undermined. Would be interested to see the evidence behind it if you have a link or two. I remember Charles Mann in 1491 making the argument that, especially in S.America, previously flourishing city/settlements seen by the first explorers were abandoned or reduced to small encampments by the time the conquistadors followed a few decades later. He puts that down to diseases, saying that oftentimes they would advance and decimate indigenous populations before they had even seen a white face (might be mixing this up with Guns Germs & Steel, it was a while ago...)
