    That wiki page seems quite propagandist, with lots of references to 'vandalism' from 'the arabs' and one claim that:

    'During the Jordanian rule, the Jewish cemetery suffered systematic damage to gravestones and tombs. As early as the end of 1949, Israeli viewers stationed on Mount Zion reported that Arab residents began uprooting tombstones. [...] In the late 1950s, the Jordanian army used tombstones to build military camps. Dozens of tombstones were completely transferred to the tomb camp, a military camp established in nearby al-Eizariya, where they were used to floor tents and toilets.'

    That claim is from a book and the other links are to webpages in hebrew. It would be interesting to hear the other side of the story, if there's any truth to it, about why there was such a strong objection to israeli use of the graveyard. I see that 'victims of the 1929 Arab riots and 1936–39 Arab revolt' and 'the fallen from the 1948 Arab–Israeli War' are buried there, which could provide a motive. Will report back if I find anything...
