It may be guessed he didn't really regard himself as on the left of the party, but rather in the center of the party, based on the old Labor Party represented by the membership, and based on his non-clause-4 type platform. As such he may have seen both the right and left wings of the party as his vehicle to a labor government, and also as his cover when winning voters to Labor against a hostile press and establishment. The unanticipated problem, perhaps, being that the right of the party were actually in the process, during his leadership, of moving the party further to the right thereby placing him no longer in the center (albeit at the center of gravity).
