I was similarly sceptical about the certainty becker seemed to show about it being an actual coup attempt based on what they said (it would really have to be an inept one, and the military types supposedly involved would surely be better at it with all their overseas experience) - but the absence of troops or the usual police action was real and obvious, as were the deliberate delays to bringing them in outlined in martin's podcast. As i said the superficial appearance of a coup/insurrection that resulted could have been thought to be of benefit to people on either 'side' inasmuch as they all love a good patriot act (especially biden, who helped write the first one), as well as continuing the culture war style politics of division which they all prefer over actual politics. Even so, i'm not sure the absence of rolling high up heads would prove anything either way - the dems would be well happy to do trump, his minions and any number of 'deplorables' for it if they could, but i'm not sure that would follow if there was support, subsequently quietly withdrawn, from people within the military establishment - wouldn't do to bring the military into disrepute. But given the lack of military/police response i lean towards some sort of manipulation for domestic purposes rather than simply a spontaneous action or straightforward coup attempt. On whose behalf the manipulation was carried out is the other question (probably both: eg trump's newly placed pentagon person refusing the national guard, and the media establishment jumping on it to carry on the orange-man-bad level of analysis we know and love them for). Saying all that, there is still the possibility that trump and some of his minions were stupid enough to think they were going to pull some sort of million man march style uprising with the will o' the people before being slapped down by wiser fascists within the military. (though reports that he was well pleased with what was going on to the chagrin of his advisers are likely made up i guess (sources say...)) |
