..or learning whichever subject you choose yourself. If you know what is fact by application of knowledge (as in, a trained doctor, plumber or electrician) its easier to discern the bullshit. We can't do that for everything, of course, which is why we have to defer to the word of mouth concept on some things.

But I kind of hate the way that the web makes people 'experts' overnight because they stayed up late on Tuesday 'researching' something. It mocks actual knowledge. That goes for whichever side of whichever fence you sit on anything. As you say, there is no substitute for decades of either amateur or professional dedication. And like everything, the more you know the less you realise you know. There is an incredible amount of certainty these days in people's views on anything, which tells me (when I see it) that most people know very little, but have become accustomed to blagging it. It really is OK for us to say 'I don't know'.

Also, in my experience there is almost always more than one way to skin a .. (not cat - probably offensive, weird saying..). Goes the same for medical care as it does for building a table or wiring a house (like the different approach to care in SA of covid patients vs in UK; there will be pros and cons to each, but doctors are working with what they are provided). Something that works is not always the best way (and I've seen some dodgy wiring/plumbing that somehow still does the job without starting a fire or leaking water). So we can still always learn something new, no matter how much knowledge and skill we possess. But the starting point isn't internet research, if you want more than lies or opinion or hearsay.

    cheers,
