"sitting for 16 hrs a day for 2 months not enough food and people a bit aggressive and irritable after a few days, oh and 24hr silence" Like not cutting your nails for years ascetic nonsense....not that meditation shouldn't be practised for extended periods but that self-flagellating is unpleasant..I prefer the Findhornian approach, grounded and making time for practice but also seeing lived communal exp. as part of the process...there is surely a patriarchal tendency within institutionalised religion that lends itself to asceticism..., however; "no man is an island"..
