-As many as a million apparently in Japan alone, and we can see similar shifts in the behaviour of youth here too: "more than half of unemployed young people in the UK feel anxious about everyday life and four out of ten said this anxiety had stopped them from leaving the house and nearly 50% said they avoided meeting new people." In Christian society such a withdrawal syndrome was once one of the seven deadly sins most often suffered by monks: Accidie. Often translated "sloth" its actual meaning was more profound: "Acedia has been variously defined as a state of listlessness or torpor, of not caring or not being concerned with one's position or condition in the world. In ancient Greece akidía literally meant an inert state without pain or care." "Evagrius of Pontus included acedia among the eight trains of thought that needed to be overcome by devout Christians. Among these, acedia was considered the most insidious. It attacked only after monks had conquered the sins of gluttony, fornication, avarice, sadness, anger, vainglory, and pride."
