Of course, that's a gross over-simplification. But, Schopenhauer is the ultimate pessimist. "My ethics, on the other hand, … frankly and sincerely admits the abominable nature of the world, and points to the denial of the will as the path to redemption therefrom." This is about the attempt to quench desire through ascetic self-abnegation. Ultimately, it is life-denying. I am all for embracing life in all its messy contingency.
