Re: dogs being savvy enough to read the situation (and the violence) and then go for the aggressor even if it's the handler ... I saw the same behaviour play out in a video taken at Museum Plein, Amsterdam, outside the Stedelijk Museum, about three or four weeks ago?
I've been unable to track the original video.
Essentially, a policeman with a dog on a leash was beating a woman with a baton. The dog then went for his handler and drove him back.

These anti-lockdown protests have been taking place most weekends in Amsterdam. Last week's footage shows the unusual sight of a line of military veterans and white-coated medical staff forming a human shield at Museum Plein, to protect protesters from police, who've been filmed well out of control recently. There's been footage of a woman water-cannoned into a wall at brutally close quarters to emerge with blood pouring down her face, a police van deliberately knocking over someone and scenes of police laying in with truncheons.
There's been so much talk in recent years about mental health but authorities appear to have zero understanding of mental health consequences of locking people down into small spaces while feeding them a never-ending diet of fear and doom, and then brutalising them when they attempt to release pressure
