Police investigate fraud allegations over ‘black hole’ in SNP war chest John Boothman Sunday April 04 2021, 12.01am BST, The Sunday Times An alleged six-figure “black hole” in the SNP’s finances has triggered a police investigation, it emerged last night. Police Scotland said a fraud inquiry was under way after the party was accused of dipping into a £600,000 war chest to fund a second independence campaign. The force said an allegation of fraud had been received and “enquiries are ongoing and at an early stage”. Amid unconfirmed rumours that detectives had visited the home of Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister, and her husband Peter Murrell, the party’s chief executive, the SNP accused political opponents of a “dirty tricks” campaign. The allegations, reported widely on social media and on the website Wings Over Scotland, relate to funds that were raised by the SNP in 2017 and 2019. The party gave assurances that the money would not be spent on party business but ring-fenced to support a future independence referendum. The apparent absence of the cash in published accounts has fuelled claims that the fund has been misspent. The resignation last month of three members of the SNP’s finance and audit committee, including Frank Ross, the lord provost of Edinburgh, and Cynthia Guthrie, a company chief executive, has only served to heighten suspicions. https://archive.fo/2vSqQ
