    Thanks for reply, Tomski.
I had a knee-jerk reaction to the article because I'd read articles last year about people in Wuhan being virtually 'welded' into apartments. There were many heartbreaking interviews on SA TV of South African students who'd gone there to study, who were locked into tiny rooms with no social support, no money, suicidal and no way to get home to Africa: the lockdown was brutal in many respects and there were many individual stories that came out of China that don't bear testament to compassion.

I should have specified in my reaction, though, that I can only talk about my own government, which seems to have revelled in the opportunity to copy China's more dramatic and draconian lockdown and offer us less democracy than before, after being given the greenlight by WHO and the West.

Given our fascist history where 'states of emergency' and 'house arrest' were familiar and favourite governmental tools for control, I guess it's normal that many South Africans have felt disturbed at the unleashed powers, as armed soldiers were wheeled into the streets and everyone was locked in their homes.
Most devastating for poor families, where children were locked in to tiny zinc shacks with alcoholic and/or abusive parents and no food, since school feeding was stopped overnight.
Our President hasn't taken a single Q & A or press conference during 2020-2021: he gives out-of-touch, patriarchal speeches addressed to "the family" (as if he's a father figure) and shows no compassion for the way lockdown shifted the burden onto the poor, while the middle class and elites 'sheltered comfortably in place', served and supplied by the vulnerable and desperate.

There's talk he will delay elections if he can drag out the 'state of covid' disaster status as long as he can.

Anyhow, thanks for posting the article, even though it set off my frustrations
    As you say:
It's a long article and the author delved into historical data regarding the international help China provided to the rest of the world and specifically to the US. The US has been smearing China and being derogatory throughout the pandemic. China has noted this and one comment is indicative what Chinese think of the US ... they had enough:
