Mr Bean? Some of us frequently and impetuously rush to support countries that are against our own wretched country. (That's almost as bad as the BBC rushing to condemn countries that are against our own wretched country). Various incidents of our collusion (yep, that's the word) spring to mind: Condoning, even celebrating, Hong Kong activists jailed in China under very severe laws. Pussy Riot jailed in Russia for playing punk rock in church. Hezbollah attacking demonstrators. Even dismissing supporters of Palestine caught yelling racist abuse as a false flag (you really should go to a few more demonstrations). The cases are predictable. No doubt coming to your screens soon - Belarus journalist taken from plane, mid-flight, (beam me up, Scotty) deserves all he gets. When we support tyranny surely we are little better than BBC journalists. Repression is repression, no matter who does it. Far from being my friend, my enemy's enemy may be my enemy. Or, at any rate, my enemy's enemy may sometimes do stuff that is totally unacceptable. And we should not condone it. Neither with words or silence. None of this, of course, is to deny that the UK is bang out of order in withholding those funds from Iran. They have a valid grievance. But, as my mother used say, two wrongs do not make a right. And locking up that unfortunate woman, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, is a wrong. Just as locking up Assange is a wrong. There's a fair bit of it about. Feck it, let's cut to the chase - locking up anybody other than violent criminals is a wrong! I make an exception in the case of Blair. Mind you, I regard him as a violent criminal. |
