For most of the war, an infantry battalion spent twelve days in the line, four in the front line, four in support and four in reserve. At the Battle of Verdun, the French withdrew a division when its casualties reached 50%. The Germans kept the same divisions in the line and topped them up with replacements, a policy reversed on the Somme and in 1917. The problem with trench warfare is that it is paradoxical. It limits casualties but un-limits the length of the war, which causes more casualties.
