Haven't read my Schumacher yet so might have misunderstood, but if new tech does succeed in 'emerging' I don't see what's preventing the existing capitalist system scaling it up and abusing it to the point where massive new disasters are added on top of the other ones it has already caused. What's to stop Drax or other power stations re-tooling their operations to burn ocean biomass in ever-increasing quantities? They already managed the shift from coal to wood pellets (mainly shipped over from the US) and are of course claiming green credentials - and subsidies - off the back of it: https://www.desmog.com/2019/02/13/comment-biomass-not-climate-solution/ You say: 'let's take it as read fuel and energy use in general needs-must-change and other priorities drive our economy' - happy to take it as read, but I'd say we have to recognise that it's still not 'our' economy (more breaking of identification) - it's theirs, ie: the capitalists & industrialists, and they will attempt to press every available 'solution' into the service of solving their problem of maximising economic growth & resource extraction. Otherwise it wasn't my intention to 'marginalise the importance' of 5G, crypto-currencies & particle beam stuff, just to say that they weren't relevant to energy production (wasn't aware of hadron's connection to fusion, link?). I agree they bring their own dangers with the same likelihood of their being exploited to serve the aims of techno-fascism. cheers, I
