re: peak oil, yes funny how that disappeared off the radar. I think it got a lot of 'end times' people and 'preppers' interested in it but when it didn't materialise as a fast-paced collapse of society around the time it was supposed to, it became less of a hot topic. Doesn't mean it's not happening of course - Tverberg's graphs & others I've seen back up the theory that we're on the 'bumpy plateau' of maximum global oil & gas production round about now, with only the shale gas / fracking boom staving off the inevitable decline, probably not for much longer. Interesting that the way it has expressed itself so far has been with low prices, rather than the high prices we were told to expect. 'It is the mindset that needs to change.' - agreed, or as Jensen puts it: 'our current sense of self is no more sustainable than our current use of energy or technology' - https://derrickjensen.org/endgame/premises/ . But then you get into the thorny problem of whether we have this unsustainable energy/technology because of the mindset that came up with them, or whether the material conditions brought about by the adoption of this energy/technology caused that mindset, with people who served that system receiving its benefits and rewards as the Herman/Chomsky model makes plain. In that case, working to change the material conditions of society might be the best way forward for eventually changing peoples' minds, rather than banging our heads on the wall trying to do it the other way round. Agreed the middle class environmentalists will be among the least likely to want to do things that way! cheers, I |
