Well, I guess the material conditions are going to change anyway, whether we like it or not. Those most likely to survive and prosper are those who can adjust their mindset to go along with the changes in conditions. The psychology/culture interface is an interesting one. A bit chicken and egg. I don't know if you know about Iain McGilchrist and his seminal work, The Master and His Emissary. He talks about left/right brain laterality and the way alterations in dominance may have cultural implications. The left and right parts of the brain see the world in different but complimentary ways. The left is more narrow focus and the right has a more open awareness. The left enables us to manipulate the world for our benefit but, unlike the right, does not see the wider context of our actions and our place as part of 'nature' not separate from it. He argues that in modern culture (as in other eras in the west) the left side of the brain has become dominant, creating the disastrous consequences we see all around us. I have obviously grossly oversimplified. But I think his thesis is a compelling one. IM does a great summary here (apols if you are already aware of this): |
