Thanks John, good video/talk, lots to think about. Was dimly aware of the theory, a lot of it makes sense esp when considering the reductive left-brain thinking that gets rewarded in political, or more widely, professional circles. Gerard said; 'We had the mindset first you don't exploit a resource without realising that [you are] exploiting it' which reminded me of seeing George Stephenson's birthplace recently. The information board said he got the idea for the utility of steam locomotion from watching coal haulers using horses being used to pull cartloads of coal on the track that went in front of his house. Could he have predicted all the changes that would come about out of this seemingly simple innovation to make a laborious process go a little faster? Yet the advent of steam locomotion enabled a vast array of changes to society, the most notable of which advanced the interests of the capitalists & imperialists who run the whole show. In fact it created a whole new class of industrialists exploiting the new technology to build huge mills & other factories, thus putting small-scale 'cottage industries' out of business. Once you make that sort of power available it takes on its own momentum and shapes the culture almost by itself, with just a few individuals needed to facilitate its progress. #luddism! cheers, I |
