I must admit that when I first saw the headline I was taken aback -- that 18 Premiership clubs had imposed a "temporary freeze" on certain sponsorship deals involving the club's owners. This seemed to be aimed at Newcastle United's takeover by the Saudi royal family (it's them that now owns the club whatever other PR BS they might try to spin it into fairy dust). Were the other clubs mounting a protest against the ownership by a regime with one of the worst human rights records on the planet? Intrigued, I read on. Silly me, of course not. They couldn't give a toss about human rights or the dismembering of a journalist. It was all to do with Newcastle's newly acquired vast wealth and the fact that they might find a loophole to sneak through the FA's "rules" about how much money clubs were able to spend (and lose). So what had freaked them out was that another club even richer than say Man United or City would sign a sponsorship deal to re-name their stadium for £100 million with their existing owner (Saudi Arabia) and circumvent the rules. Boy, did I feel stupid. |
