    Far from aligning itself with imperial regime change narratives regarding Syria, Declassified has done more than most to expose the way the west has used Islamist proxies in its attempts to overthrow the Assad government over the last decade.

    The article is talking about the way Blair cosied up to Assad in the early 2000s in order to advance western - specifically British - economic interests.

    The repressive authoritarian nature of the Syrian governments under both Assads was conveniently overlooked. Indeed, tacitly welcomed as long as they served western interests.

    I seem to remember the west getting Syria onside as it pursued its imperial designs in Iraq.

    With the so-called Arab Spring, the west saw an opportunity for a regime change that would be more advantageous to its interests. It was also in Israel's interests to weaken a neighbouring state.

    However authoritarian or 'dictatorial' the Assad government is it is certainly the legitimate government.

    You don't have to like the governments of 'official enemies' in order to oppose imperial machinations. But, it is also legitimate to be highly critical of them.

    Anti-imperialism is about asserting the right of the peoples of other countries to work out their own destinies without foreign interference.

    They can be - and ought to be - criticised and exposed if they abuse human rights.

    That does not mean that one supports a western imperialist regime change narrative.

    But, failure to criticise obvious abuses opens one to the charge of being an apologist.
