"gene-manipulating tech being stuck in them to 'protect' them from a virus" Nothing much to add, just to correct this common misconception - mRNA on its own cannot change DNA - it goes the other way - strings of RNA are made from DNA and then go into the ribosomes to make proteins. The mRNA in the vaccine goes into the cell and gets the ribosomes to make copies of the spike protein, which then produce the immune response - it cannot change the DNA of the cell. (whether this process has long term issues is another question, but it won't/can't insert new genes). Viruses can change the DNA, but they're called retroviruses then (I think) - these are made from RNA instead of DNA, but also have reverse transcriptase enzyme in them to make that happen. As to the relative risks from covid and the vaccine, the numbers I've found range from the outside (deaths following vaccine reported in the yellow card system) 1,645 uk deaths since they started, though they say when investigated it only turns out to be 9 directly attributable. Even if we accepted the larger figure, that's about a week or two of current covid deaths and still a tiny proportion of overall vaccinated (nearly 50 million) - the official number of covid cases is about 9 million, but obviously many more have had it - even if we say 50 million have had it, then the deaths (147,000) are about a hundred times higher than the highest number of vaccine-related deaths above. So the riskier proposition looks obvious to me, at least in the short term (and we don't know the long term effects of covid either). And even if I think I'd probably be fine catching covid (a bit of an assumption given my health), taking a vaccine is about protecting the most vulnerable not ourselves (including those who won't take one, though hopefully that's a small enough number that it works overall) - I risk the possible complications of the vaccine to protect my mum and others like her.
