@Mark, interesting point re: neoliberal attitudes towards to the elderly & infirm and how covid may have been exploited to do away with the responsibility of caring for them. I was too young to notice similar sentiments when HIV/AIDS came out, but what you say about a vicious social undercurrent viewing the disease as righteous retribution sounds plausible. I wonder if you'd accept that this cuts both ways though? Witness the glee with which videos of anti-vaxxers recanting on their deathbeds are shared around, for example. Chomsky's statements seem to come from the same gated community ethos as H.Clinton's 'basket of deplorables' when referring to those opposed to her brand of neoliberalism in the 'flyover' states of the US. The way he keeps referring to 'the community' is a giveaway - whose community, and who gets to decide who belongs and who can be cast out or fenced inside a designated exclusion zone? Even though 'anti-vaxxers' refuse for many different reasons and come from different backgrounds & political persuasions, they all get lumped in under the stupid, rightwing, libertarian bigot category.
