I think the raw numbers aren't as important as what that population are doing/how they live - eg stupid things like flying or shipping stuff around the world/outsourcing/useless plastic nonsense etc - most of that's not really needed I'd have thought so if we could get rid of some/.most of that (ie fundamentally change society), we might be ok ("be realistic, demand the impossible!" as the saying goes) - also 10 billion people with the carbon footprint of the average westerner will be bad (we'll need about 6 earths), but the average eg African, not so much. And anyway, I think the lack of real action Thunberg identifies will probably reduce the population by other means.
