When a virus kills that many people, I think it doesn't tend to spread as fast (as half the people are dead so can't transmit it as much). Only 800 (known) infections since 2003 suggests it's not too worrying - but mutations can happen of course (and factory farming conditions seem the ideal place for that to happen). I remember them panicking about it back in the noughties and then it not doing all that much (there was H1N1 too) - I think that was what the pandemic plan the uk used for covid was based on, hence why it was no use.
