More than that, we will continue to support and encourage those who are yet to get the vaccines to do so. At every point in our programme we have made jabs easily accessible and worked with all communities to build trust and boost uptake. That vital work will continue, including through engagement with the communities where uptake is the lowest; through one-to-one conversations with all unvaccinated staff in the NHS; and through the use of our national vaccination programme capacity, with walk-in centres and pop-up centres, to make it as easy as possible to get the jab. Let me be clear: no one working in the NHS or in care who is currently unvaccinated should be scapegoated, singled out or shamed. That would be totally unacceptable. This is about supporting them to make a positive choice to protect vulnerable people, protect their colleagues and, of course, protect themselves. The chief executive of the NHS will write to all NHS trusts today to underline just how vital the vaccination efforts are. I am sure the whole House will want to join me in paying tribute to the heroic responses across health and care. Those who work in health and care have been the very best of us in the most difficult of days. Care, compassion and conscience continue to be their watchwords, and I know they will want to do the right thing. Today’s decision is about doing right by them and by everyone who uses the NHS, so that we protect patients in the NHS, protect colleagues in the NHS and protect the NHS itself. I commend this statement to the House.' How many remain to be 'supported' in this way? 'The take-up throughout the NHS in England is 93% for the first dose and 90% for two doses, which leaves, I think, 103,000 people in the NHS who are unvaccinated—in other words, they do not have even one jab.' He talks up the result of the care home mandate which has apparently reduced the amount of unvaccinated workers from 88,000 to 32,000, with the deadline coming up tomorrow, Nov 11th. A strange thing to brag about, the sacking of 32,000 people from an already struggling sector. A lot of those people will have gotten jobs in the NHS, now they'll have to get kicked out again in April, meaning the number of losses could be proportionally greater, maybe 40,000 more healthworkers out of the current 100,000 unvaccinated? Are these the 'heroes' we were all encouraged to clap for throughout the pandemic, or are they now to have that service forgotten and erased? Hard to see how shame, social stigmatisation or scapegoating won't be a result of this measure. Here was how Javid threatened & insulted care home workers on the Today Program at the start of October: 'If you work in a care home you are working with some of the most vulnerable people in our country, and if you cannot be bothered to go and get vaccinated then get out and go and get another job. "If you want to look after them, if you want to cook for them, if you want to feed them, if you want to put them to bed, then you should get vaccinated. If you are not going to get vaccinated then why are you working in care?" [...] "If you think about elderly relatives you might have in care homes, and the idea that someone wants to look after them and they don't want to take a perfectly safe and effective vaccine... because somehow they have got some objection to this vaccine, then really, honestly, they shouldn't be in our care homes." Why is it ordinary workers who must 'take responsibility' or face the consequences of losing their jobs, when this standard is never applied to politicians or healthcare management? jeers, I |
