It's much harder to generate noise and interest (and heat and annoyance for the authorities) when someone is doing life and not in danger of execution. The main legal issue now seems to be whether the governor is legally allowed to specify a sentence life with the possibility of parole, which he currently claims not to be, hence the commutation to life without.
