Yup, that's a good'un. Looked up the source and it's the same 'how I got licked' book you referenced previously, with a few others making similar statements in the late 19th & early 20th centuries: https://quoteinvestigator.com/2017/11/30/salary/
Personally, I was hoping that working lower-paid manual jobs would help keep me sane and critical, but I notice pressures all the time nudging me towards capitalist ideology. Being in gardening and farming has been especially challenging for one who used to value wildlife and ecology as of supreme importance (albeit in theory, not practice). Now I have exactly the same automatic behaviour to 'weeds' and 'pests' programmed into me which I used to criticise: rip them out, stomp, squish, poison, make them go away, create a 'hostile environment' etc. Being organic takes the edge off, mostly by invalidating the usual arsenal of chemical weapons, but still... At least it has taken away my illusions! And, despite the antogonism it is an actual relationship with the wild plants & animals, whereas before it was the usual (sub)-urban value of 'look but don't touch', ie: total separation. Brings home the truth of cultural materialism, the idea that the physical realities of your subsistence basically dictate your attitudes and philosophies (more extended rationalisations!) as you go about your business, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_materialism_%28anthropology%29
