Good stuff from Kingsnorth. He's right to draw attention to the way Covid has exposed, among other factors, the fragmented nature of our society and the deeper cultural (and spiritual?) malaise underlying that fragmentation. We no longer believe in the old myths that used to hold our communities together and we've yet to find replacements that can satisfy our deeper needs. Shopping and technology are distractions not solutions.

Don't forget, this is all a rehearsal for (indeed is probably part of) the big social upheavals on their way because of climate change, peak oil, biodiversity crashes etc. Stuff the state gets away with instituting now will be baked in to how it will respond to those much greater calamities, as I'm sure the ones driving these policies are fully aware.

Indeed. Unless we can change our societies radically and in short order in ways that are compatible with a measure of liberty and a sense of empathy, we will indeed be facing tyrannies the like of which we have never before experienced in our lifetimes.
