Thanks Keith, I have read most of this article, but it is rather long and bit repetitive, also covers more detailed history than strictly relevant. I think anyone posting here a long article, might wish to give a paragraph or two of summary that we can read quickly and gain the major salient points. The basic thesis of the article is that the US doesn't wish Europeans to come to any sort of economic, security or political understanding with Russia, although of course Russia is itself part of Europe. The reasons are historical, emotional, political and economic. Basically Russia is to the US "unfinished business" - somehow following the disintegration of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact countries, Russia has survived as a significant powerful nation and geopolitical rival of the US. The US's covetous intentions to Russia have mostly failed, though the Russian kleptocracy is a serious bleeding of Russian wealth. Putin has had a big hand in ensuring that Russia remains intact and functioning but he also seems himself to part of that haemorrhaging kleptocracy. Create an invasion crisis, get Ukraine to play the fall guy for worthless promises, create a panic and stimulate some sort of conflict. The Europeans will then have to agree to even bigger sanctions, as the other ones haven't worked, and that ever so inconvenient to the US Nordstream 2 will have to be abandoned, even if those sanctions have Europe's own citizens shivering in their freezing homes. Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face; that the Europeans (I exclude the more suspicious and cynical ex Warsaw Pact nations) would fall for this is just about as insane as the US creating the panic in the first place. But there you are, it's sort of working, along with a complicit media, but there are flickers of independent thought in Germany and France, which the US still has to stamp out. No problem with the UK though, its special relationship remains secure as Starmer has himself asserted - after all no-one would trust anything Boris says, but Starmer, well, he's a real statesman in waiting, isn't he. So yes, in a sense the headline does contain a kernel of truth, but it's still Russia that's the main enemy. More simply the fact is that any nation on the planet that fails to kowtow to the US's hegemony or tries to resist the US's economic predators makes itself the US's enemy.
