When the Russians intervened in Syria, I thought that a lot of the US provocations were intended to get the Russians to tip their technological hands, radar, communications, ECM, ECCM etc. I thought that the Russians did well to resist the temptation. Like you I was sceptical of claims that the Russians were going to intervene in the US-Ukronazi war against the Donbas loyalists. Like the miners' strike, I didn't want it but once it was on, it became a matter of justice.
