"...who is saying that there's much more to it than that..." -theres really not: that's the bottom line. In fact its quite bizarre to hear him declaring " For them, (ie. the Russian elite) a country is a place with resources that need to be sold..." and yet seem to be so purblind in not understanding that the war is exactly about the avoidance of becoming a Comprador state in its entirety. That he really doesn't get it that all is confirmed when he says things like: "On the other hand, this operation does not have any specific purpose...." "...makes them look like some kind of heroic resistance, like say, Cuba, which they most certainly are not." -I don't actually know anyone who thinks Russia is operating a heroic resistance like Cuba. What I see is a vast resource and land rich Russia attempting to survive a plan by a foreign empire to use Ukraine to reduce and destroy Russian sovereignty and enable the looting of its resources. On this Russia has acted decisively in Crimea and has now taken action (albeit belatedly) in Donbas. Your man Kagarlitsky seems myopic in not wanting to recognise that fact nor indeed see the greater threat.
