Ok - I see all that but don't share your certainty that that's all there is to it. For Kag the war is mainly driven by domestic political needs of the Putin administration, to shore up dwindling public support, rather than the geopolitical side of it. They expected it to only last a few days and made a huge mistake, he says. A professor of sociology and a long time dissident political activist, he must know them well. For the record I don't have the certainty to come down hard on either side and the reality is probably a mix of factors. Anyway, we'll see how it goes.
