Have only glanced at that, Ian. Basically, the opening and the end. For now. "They lied to us about communism, but everything they said about capitalism turned out to be true." That seems to be Konstantin Syomin - left wing Russian journalist. https://www.reddit.com/r/socialism/comments/7y7r1r/konstantin_syomin_they_lied_to_us_about_communism/ Sounds about right. "They" being the Communist leadership. I've read dozens of books on Russia, later USSR, (it's become a bit of an ongoing obsession) and had hoped/expected to find that what the West told us about "Soviet style" Communism was false but unfortunately a lot of it seems to have been all too true. Where the West does lie is in equating that brand of communism with socialism in order to tarnish real socialism and, indeed, the very idea of soviets. Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Bukharin and the rest of them provided the West with that opportunity. That's why Chomsky hates the Bolsheviks so much. Incidentally, Soviets - the very first example was in the revolution of 1905 - were examples of real democracy at work but after the revolution of Oct 2017 the Bolsheviks took them over and eventually got rid of them. The last thing they wanted was real democracy. (And don't confuse that sham we have in the West with real democracy). Consequently, the very title USSR is a complete misnomer and sheer propaganda. Those brave souls (initially mainly women) who overthrew the Tzar in the February revolution that we hear so little about had no idea what they were letting themselves in for. The dream perished in a brief 7 or so months. A cautionary tale for us all to beware who we surrender control over our lives to in the hope of a better future. The Howard Zinn sounds like it might be from his collection of essays in his "You can't be neutral on a moving train". Haven't read them in a while. https://b-ok.cc/s/?q=You+can%27t+be+neutral+on+a+moving+train%22 Only had time to glance at your post but "a moral victory" sounds pretty important.
