I know at least two suicides in academia as a direct result of academic life.
Probably others, here, are aware of suicides among students due to the pressures they face that are purely related to performance.
Albeit The Guardian is the purported mouthpiece of the professional and managerial class, it does not speak in their best interests by wingeing with a political agenda about the rigors and stresses faced in academic life. The best advice for anyone contemplating suicide is to SEEK HELP. If that help were to read “The Guardian” it would probably just end up making the mentally robust feel suicidal. Because misplacing the root cause of anything is, in itself, the root cause of a lot of unhappiness or much worse.
