I had read repeated stories all about how Dugin was Putin's ideological guru...but it was notable that all were from US sources (i.e the security services)and pretty much entirely evidence free. The conclusion I had reached was that this didn't reflect a Russian reality but rather that Dugin was part of the narrative the establishment was attempting to sell us about Putin.
